This estimator calculates the number of access points needed based on building square footage, IEEE standard, and application requirements. Enter your building dimensions and select your deployment parameters to receive an estimated AP count and layout recommendations.
Note: This estimator does not account for building materials (e.g., reinforced concrete walls) or exterior coverage requirements. Adjust estimates based on your specific environment.
You will notice some differences between the number of access points estimated and the number of access points per row multiplied by the number of rows. This difference exists because the base number of access points is calculated off square footage divided by the best practice AP coverage. Where as the layout proposal is based off building width plus cell radius divided by cell diameter and building length plus cell radius divided by cell diameter.
If location accuracy is desired, full length and width are accounted for as the first AP needs to be on the exterior corner. By adding the radius of 1 cell, the first row is bumped into the room 1 AP cell from both exterior walls.
Important: These are estimations. Please evaluate the proposed numbers and compare with what you know about the environment such as walls, doors, furniture, lighting, etc.
The following is a generalized Data and Voice layout. Please be aware that if the room is open office space, adjust the pattern at the edges of the room. Moving the access points in the center of the room closer to each other can occur but depending on what's selected could result in co-channel interference.
With location based patterns, the access points need to be positioned around the outside of a building for increased location accuracy.
